Moviemaker DEBORAH KAMPMEIER is still defending her controversial movie HOUNDDOG a week after it was banned by a leading U.S. cinema chain, insisting her young star Dakota Fanning's rape scene didn't even include physical contact. The writer/director has been blasted by family groups for featuring provocative scenes with child star Fanning, who plays a nine year old in the film. But Kampmeier, who has been cleared of child exploitation accusations by officials in North Carolina - where the film was shot, insists she took the utmost care to protect her young stars in all the scenes that have upset critics. And the controversial rape scene was nothing more than careful editing. Kampmeier tells WENN, "When you take a shot of Dakota coming in the door, her foot tripping, a boy moving towards the camera, her face saying 'stop,' and you put them together in the editing room you get a rape scene. We never rehearsed a rape scene. She never acted out a rape scene; it's all so technical. "I was a foot away from her face when we were shooting her face, which is all we have, other than her hands, in the rape scene. I was a foot away saying, 'Hold your breath, hold your breath, don't make a sound. Hold it, hold it, don't make a sound.' And then we'd go into the editing room and we'd remove my voice saying that and have her do an additional dialogue recording session. "Why is it that people see heads blown off in movies all the time and no one says, 'Oh my God, did they really have their head blown off?'" And Kampmeier insists another provocative scene, in which Fanning appears to be naked, was not what it seemed either. She adds, "She had a full piece body suit on that was a nude colour. All you really see is her shoulders. "Of course she was not naked. I have a daughter; I am a daughter. I cherish and honour the souls of girls and women. In the completed film, the rape scene lasts less than one minute. To shoot it, Kampmeier said there was no simulation of a sex act. Instead she shot closeups of faces, hands and feet. She stood a foot away from Fanning's face and told her when to hold her breath, when to gasp.
Another film drawing criticism is the Dakota Fanning film, "Hounddog." Catholic League president Bill Donohue wanted a federal investigation of the film to see if child pornography laws were being violated during shooting. The film contains a graphic rape scene with Fanning, who was twelve at the time of filming. Donohue said he would request First Lady Laura Bush, who just days ago met with first ladies from other countries to discuss a fight against child pornography and pedophilia, to assist him in this matter. "Hounddog" will debut to the public at Sundance on Monday, January 22nd.
Set in the rural south in the early or mid-1960s, Hounddog stars Fanning as Lewellen, a precocious 12-year-old girl who lives in a rundown shack with her no account, alcoholic father (David Morse). Between lazy days of swimming in the creek with her best friend Buddy (Cody Hanford) and being berated by her ultra-religious grandmother (an almost unrecognizable Piper Laurie), Lewellen indulges in the forbidden "devil's music," i.e. rock and roll, in specific Elvis tunes. Things go from bad to worse when her father becomes a semi-invalid after being struck by lightning, and the milk delivery boy takes an unseemly interest her. But the actual attack is mercifully brief and about as tastefully handled as a child rape scene can be.
People who protest Hounddog's rape scene -- aside from forgetting that this is a movie and there are real children being raped and sexually exploited -- are missing the real travesty of the film. Aside from the fact that the screenplay reads like a Southern Gothic version of an ABC Afterschool Special, somebody should inform Hounddog's writer/director/producer, Deborah Kampmeir, that this is the year 2007 and she can stop forcing her African-American actors to do the emotional equivalent of a shuck and jive.

This week, one of those films has had people buzzing. The movie "Hounddog" shows young actress Dakota Fanning being raped.Moviegoers know Dakota Fanning as the big screen equivalent of the kid next door. But the 12-year-old's newest role has a decidedly adult edge. Her character is raped on screen. The controversy stems from the small budget drama "Hounddog". It casts Fanning as a free spirited Elvis fan living with a poor, abusive father in the 1960's south. "The girl's already a phenomenal actress. She doesn't need to be doing rape scenes, but she's trusting people with her career and there's no reason to have this out there," said Ben Ferguson, Radio America host.The rape scene is the major reason it took Hounddog's writer and director ten years to get financing for her film. She defends the scene as a small, but crucial element."I'm thinking about telling my story as best as I can," said Deborah Kampmeier, writer-director. But one former child star is outraged. "If I did this in my neighborhood and called myself an artist and hired a 12 year old to do this, I'd be in jail," said Paul Petersen, former child star.Fanning herself as a simple message for those criticizing the film sight unseen. "I hope they can see the movie, because I think the truth becomes very clear to them, or just not judge something until you see it with your own eyes," said Dakota Fanning.Some critics who did, at this week's Sundance film festival, were unimpressed. "It is a bad movie. It is not a well made movie," said Wesley Morris, Boston Globe. "It's a compendium of southern gothic clichés that doesn't hit the mark," said Glenn Kenny, Premiere Magazine.But "Hounddog" has hit the mark when it comes to causing Controversy. Local authorities in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the film was shot, say no laws were broken in the filming of the scene in question. The final version of the scene in the film is not graphic and shows no nudity. It's darkly lit and shows only Fanning's face and hands.Filmmakers have been screening "Hounddog" at this week's Sundance film festival in Utah in hopes of landing a deal with a major studio to distribute the film to theaters nationwide.
